Then there was Free Lunch.

I like Donor's Day because almost no one is as interested in Archives and Manuscripts as other archivists and collectors and documentary historians. This is the creme de la creme of geek.

Now I am moseying off to the Civic Square to see how long the lines are to get into the newly reopened City Gallery. I am happy to live in a city where this is an event that there are big lines at though.

Next week - WoW!
Oh, there are days when I feel like crap, and I turn back to trusty Live Journal to complain about it. I am on twitter and facebook now, but there are plenty of casual acquaintances hanging out there including people I work with. This precludes me sounding anything but cheerful online, as they might - oh god - ask me about why I feel crap, and anyway, I'd be breaking the unspoken rule that either everyone complains about work or no one does.

Fortunately, none of my other online presences even sniffs back in the direction of LJ. I have kept it as separate as possible. And I think that I am going to appreciate that. It makes me remember when no one knew who you were online unless you told them.

Went to a farewell last night for Sam (Sam from the Isle of Mann) which was very fun. I do like the folk of the SFBH. They are nice. They tell jokes. They drink drinks. It's all very convivial and they make me feel like part of the group, even though I am not around very much. There is the elder statesmen, which includes Davey and Chris, then the bright young things (most either students or world travellers), and a couple of wee teens commonly referred to as dishpigs. They are all showing the terrible signs of being submitted to a comedy festival all last month, i.e. nothing is funny unless it is really really offensive. Oh, so offensive.

My new favourite drink is Montenegro, which is a bitter orange liquor drunk straight with ice. Important to me is the taste (delicious!) and the fact that it is not a very high alcohol content (22% or thereabouts) which helps when drinking with bartenders - "Would you like another?""What are you drinking?""Try one of these!" - it can help to have a potent looking drink in your hands already.

On leaving at the sedate hour of 10.30, they are bellowing along to Elton John, in Sam's honour, "Oh no no no ... I'm an Isle of Man .... Isle of Man! burning out his fuse up here alone! And I think it's gonna be a long long time ..." until We see Sam again in the Isle of Man ....

For a start, Davey and I are never in one place at one time long enough to discuss it, for another thing I have so much money in my savings right now and it is going to hurt like knives to spend it, especially $5000 for tickets in one go - never having spent that much money at once before - argh! Also, flying is scary and being mugged is scary and I'm having a hard time convincing myself that I really want to go.

So to help me (because I do want to go, I do I do) I have decided to invite you good folks who have been Over the Seas to Europe before to our place on this Monday night (the only night that Davey and I are reliably free at the same time) for talks about what to do, where to go, etc. Please feel free to bring your lonely planets even if they are out of date.

One guy at work asked me an interesting idea the other day. He said, do you have a 'theme' for your trip?

Basic dinner will be provided for the people who are there when it's done.

Soon, I may be internet active in my own personal living space, under my own steam, for the first time in my life. It is a heady thing, and not quite true because Jo provided some steam as well. Anyway, I had been hanging on to my parent's old printer just in case Davey wanted it, but he says no. If you know someone who might need it - it is no great shakes, but would be ok for printing assignments etc., it is free to a good home. Because my parents are extremely conscientious type people, it has all drivers and manuals attached.

It's funny, I used to know lots of students that needed stuff. Then as soon as I stopped being one, so did everyone else? I guess if no one wants it I will take it to the Shop of Op.

Mmmm, I have a new perfume. it smells like cloves and crysamthnums. I wander around town (smelly bogans! everywhere! I want an alice cooper tshirt now .... ) and stand drooling in front of the prettiest dress in the world in Karen Walker's window. I would get married just to have an excuse to buy this dress, and considering the presumed price, any lesser occasion would not justify it's purchase. Also, it is NOT the one with the bubble skirt, how could you think that of me. I know I've made some interesting fashion choices in my time, but really!

Tonight my house will smell of STOO. I am currently trying to perfect my stoo-making abilities - does anyone have any tips? I do have a marvelous casserole pot from the 70s to cook it in.

I look a bit like someone tried to make me out on fimo, badly, but I don't mind. I'll sharpen up when I have to, right now, just smudgy.

I offer 'Pretty in Pink' viewing tonight at 8.30 at my house (it is on the paying-type telly). It is a great movie to watch with other people. Anyone? Just bowl on up or text me if you have any questions as I won't be online again today.

Some pretty fun firsts in my life this week - Yum Cha, and paid for telly. These developments could lead to personal growth, at least sideways and probably out in the front too.

I was sorry I couldn't go to the picnic on Saturday, but my parents were in town and I was running around being filial and stuff. I cooked laksa for them, with mixed results - the laksa was fine but the parents were dubious about it ... "it's quite spicy isn't it" "it's like restaurant food"(?). I make my spicy things quite mild, but any chilli is quite exotic apparently ...

On Sunday I went to Yum Cha (see above) with some folks from my work, and it was super super delicious. Why have I never gone before? Would any one else like to make it an occasional thing? I can't see myself going every Sunday, but I would love to go every couple of weeks with a group of about 5 at the least, this seems like a good number for getting a good variety of dishes.

Everything is sunshine and and roses in the land of me. Except that I don't like sunshine and roses.

This is quite the theme du jour in my life - its all really great, but I am dissatisfied with it. Or annoyed, because I can't find anything to be disgruntled about. I have been trying for weeks not to buy anything new, because this is sometimes how I deal with this feeling and it is not smart (2 weeks later, still disgruntled, and poorer). It can be quite a dagerous thing, because I might pick fights to feel like I have something to feel done-wrong-by about. WARNING!

Very interesting post in beauty on zcatcurious's journal. I took a picture with the cam at this geek watering hole, and turns out that I am attractive but not smart (forgets that the picture is produced by the camera, not the screen).

Davey and I are off to Nelson for a few days to pretend that we like summer and see Davey's granma who is a nice lady. So, there will be no open house this coming Monday.

Alasatyr will like this; I just bought a CD for $8 called High school reuinion: A tribute to those great 80s films. Including the dresden dolls performing pretty in pink. I do still buy CDs because I do not find that the browsing paradigm works for me online. Of course often I simply make a note of band and album title. But $8!
